Learn to understand, assess and treat a range of psychological, emotional and behavioural difficulties. The PGDipClinPsyc will give you the practical skills and knowledge you need to register and practise as a clinical psychologist.
Gain expertise in the scientific methods within clinical practice and learn to combine compassion and respect for others with excellence in practice.
This three-year professional course of study is a clinical training programme that is completed alongside a Master's or PhD research thesis. You'll graduate with a PGDipClinPsyc and a Master’s or PhD degree, and be able to work as a clinical psychologist within health, corrections and a range of community settings.
Flexible options
You can complete the PGDipClinPsyc alongside the Master's programme in Forensic Psychology. And in the first year of the PGDipClinPsyc programme, you can substitute some courses with others from the Master's programmes in Cross-Cultural Psychology and Cognitive and Behavioural Neuroscience. In all cases, you'll need to discuss these options with both programme directors first.
Pathway to the diploma
You'll need an A- average in your Psychology courses in your last year of study, and to undergo a selection process before being granted provisional entry. You'll need to be able to demonstrate your commitment to biculturalism by, for example, having undertaken a basic Māori language and culture course or attended a Treaty of Waitangi workshop. The School is able to admit only 10 students each year and final acceptance is conditional on a police check.
To be accepted into this programme you will need:
A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline
To be accepted by the head of school as capable of proceeding with the proposed course of study
To be a registered health professional
